What is the DST Index?

The Disturbance Storm Time (DST) Index measures the intensity of geomagnetic storms by tracking the horizontal component of Earth's magnetic field. It's derived from magnetometer readings at four low-latitude observatories and provides a global measure of geomagnetic disturbance.

Storm Classifications

Minor: DST -50 to -100 nT
Moderate: DST -100 to -200 nT
Strong: DST -200 to -350 nT
Extreme: DST < -350 nT

DST and Aurora

Strong negative DST values (more negative) indicate intense geomagnetic storms, which typically produce stronger and more widespread aurora displays. However, DST measures global storm intensity, while aurora visibility depends on local conditions, Kp Index, and solar wind Bz component.
